Bumper plates were initially designed for Olympic weightlifting, where the weight is typically lifted from the ground to an overhead position, then released. As you can imagine, the stress of such impact carries a great risk of damage to the plates, the barbell, and the flooring. To minimize this impact, bumper plates feature two distinct design elements that make them stand out from the rest, the resilient rubber outer shell and rim, and the uniform diameter of 450 mm regardless of the weight of the plate. Because of the rubber flat surface that this design creates, the impact to the floor is much softer, and a lot of the force is transferred back into the plate allowing it to bounce instead of driving into the ground. This is much safer for the flooring as it prevents cracks or dents from forming in the floor, with the added benefit of reducing a lot of the noise of impact. It also makes the weight itself safer to use, as it reduces the risk of injury when performing high intensity overhead movements.
