What’s a lifting belt and do you need it?
September 03, 2021Back in the Before times, you probably saw people lifting heavy weights at the gym with a thick belt around their waist. Now, if you lift at home, does that mean you need a belt too? It depends.
What’s a lifting belt?
A weightlifting belt is a thick belt placed around your lower back that helps prevent hyperextension and keeps your spine in the correct position. It also compresses your abs to reduce lower back stress. You feel more aware of your back position when wearing the belt which can be a great reminder to keep the correct form. For beginners, a belt can also help them understand how to squeeze the abdominal muscles properly.
There are different types of lifting belts: it can be velcro for easy wearing or leather and other thick materials for stabilizing the spine. You can get a conventional belt that has a thicker part that goes on your lower back, or a powerlifter-style belt that is the same width all around.

Do I need a lifting belt?
Unless you are an advanced powerlifter, deadlifter, or Olympic lifter, you don’t really need a lifting belt. For recreational purposes, it’s best to learn your correct form and use weights that you are comfortable with to prevent injury. A weightlifting belt won’t do anything if you are doing exercises that are not placing any stress on the back. A belt will also not improve your performance although you may feel more confident wearing it! For those new to lifting, you are best off doing consistent core work to strengthen your muscles before you get into heavy lifting so your body can support the exercises.
