How to use jump boxes in a workout
September 15, 2022Let’s practice your vertical — the vertical jump that is. Jump boxes are versatile gym equipment, popular in functional training programs and in cross-fit gyms. Here is how to use jump boxes in a workout so you can decide whether or not you need them for your home gym.
What are jump boxes in working out?
As you may infer from the name, jump boxes consist of you jumping up on specially made exercise boxes, whether the jump itself is the exercise, or if it’s a part of an extended training routine. Note that box jumps are for intermediate to advanced level exercisers since it is a pretty involved movement where some base strength is required to execute the jump correctly and lower the chance of injuring yourself.
Benefits of box jumps in your fitness routine
Did you know there is a special name for jumping exercises? Box jumps fall under plyometrics and are great for your body — not only are they a fun way to spice up your workout routine, but jumping is also a high-impact exercise targeting main leg muscle groups such as quads, glutes, hamstrings and calves.
Plyometric exercises with box jumps are a great way to improve your strength, speed, and overall power. Plus, jumping is an explosive movement which is a great way to get your blood flowing and improve your reflexes, not to mention you will be able to jump higher over time!
How to use jump boxes in a workout
To get started with box jumps, choose a lower height so you get the hang of it and don’t hit your shins super hard on the box if you don’t quite make the jump. After you master the art of using momentum and propelling yourself up on the box with the strength of your legs, you can try boxes that are taller.
Where in your routine you incorporate box jumps depends on your goals and what your other training looks like — you can do a few explosive reps for building strength or more reps on lower height for conditioning.
Jump box for home gym
When considering purchasing a jump box or two for your home gym, keep in mind the following factors:
-
Space constraints: usually boxes are not that small so think about where you will put it and how far away you need to be to actually jump up on it.
-
Protect the floor and yourself in case you fall off: what is the surface of your home gym? If it’s in your garage, make sure to get some padding or fitness mats so you don’t hurt yourself.
-
The height of the jump box: if you are just starting out, consider a lower height, however, if you are an advanced gym-goer, you can go ahead with your preferred height for your home gym. There are also adjustable jump boxes where you can change the height!
