How to do aerobic exercise at home

November 15, 2021

When you think of aerobics, do you imagine skintight colorful outfits and thick headbands? Jane Fonda and DVD home workouts? While the 1980s are behind us, aerobic exercise is still very much a part of the 21st-century fitness regime and the benefits are vast - here is how and why you should do aerobics at home.

What is aerobic exercise?

Aerobic literally means “with oxygen”. The purpose of aerobic exercise is cardiovascular conditioning and it’s recommended to perform at least 30 minutes of it 5-7 times per week, which is basically every day! This particular type of exercise is important because we are bringing oxygen to our muscles, helping them move and burn fuel.

Benefits of aerobic exercise

  • Increases heart rate and strengthens your heart.

  • Gets the blood moving so you move around stagnant energy and feel more active and lively.

  • Regular aerobic exercise can increase your stamina too.

  • Depending on the exercises you are doing, you can build muscle too

How to use an aerobic bar for exercise

Aerobics doesn’t all have to be fun outfits and rooms with mirrors. Even things like cycling and swimming count because they are cardio! And at home, you can roll out a yoga mat and get started with a jump rope or higher impact routines with things like burpees.

There is also aerobic equipment that you might find helpful in working out specific muscle groups, for example, upper body targeting with an aerobic bar. This is a weighted body bar that is also called a cardio bar sometimes. You don’t add any weight onto it, such as metal plates, that you would in the weight section at the gym.

With an aerobic bar, you can work on your back muscles and the shoulder range of motion by stretching out your arms out in front of you, holding the bar, then slowly lowering it with straight arms, then slowly lifting it fully over your head, and back. It’s normal to adjust your grip for this. You can also do squats with this bar, or even calf raises!

An aerobic bar is an awesome way to spice up your daily cardio workout, improve your posture, and lessen any back pain!
